Tornax wurde durch Ernst Wewer (er war gelernter Uhrmacher) gegründet. Er selbst war Sportfahrer, der mit starken englischen Motorrädern schon ab 1923 große Erfolge errang. Leider versagten auf den sehr schlechten deutschen Strassen die zu schwachen englischen Fahrgestelle. Sie waren den hohen Leistungen der Motore nicht gewachsen und brachten Ernst Wewer damit um so manchen sicher geglaubten Sieg. Dieses damals sehr verbreitete Übel wollte er unbedingt abstellen.
