41. Stevens Brothers (Wolverhampton) Ltd.
|
The Stevens brothers must have been devastated after the closure of A.J.S. in October 1931. They lost nearly everything in the process, and yet decided to roll up their sleeves and start all over again from the beginning. Luckily they still owned their old Retreat Street premises, which in the intervening years had been used by the Stevens Screw Company Limited. |

John Marston, the man who started it all, was born in Ludlow in 1836. He was the son of a minor landowning family, who sent him to Wolverhampton, at the age of 15 to be apprenticed to Edward Perry, a japanware manufacturer. At the age of 23 he left and set up his own japanning business in Bilston, making any and every sort of domestic article. John did so well that when Perry died in 1871, he took over Perry's company and incorporated it in his own. |

It all began when Bill Lyons met William Walmsley who had just moved to Blackpool from Stockport. They both lived in King Edward Avenue, Blackpool and were interested in motorcycles. Bill Lyons was a motorcycle enthusiast, and William Walmsley built sidecars in his parents’ garage, and attached them to reconditioned motorcycles. Bill met William when he purchased a sidecar for his own motorcycle. He persuaded him to expand the business with himself as a partner. |
